DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Euripides’ Electra is one of several Greek tragedies to tell the story of the cursed House of Atreus, and has long been a favorite play of mine. This contemporary rendering of the story is founded in the original, but includes flights of fancy that are the product of a series of improvisations and discussions with the cast. Although this production is far from a typical clown show, we have been eager to include the many extremities of Euripides’ remarkable tale, from horror to comedy, tragedy to farce. I am especially convinced that Euripides was keenly aware of the countless ironies at play in the relationship between people and the gods in the mythical legends that lay at the foundation of Greek culture - and how those ironies maintain their resonance at any time, in every place.
It has been a pleasure and a privilege to collaborate with actors from The Clown School and my acting studio, and a team of creatives from many differing backgrounds, on this production. - DB
